0:01 Getting ready for the solar eclipse
0:03 we are into all things solar and whoo!
0:05 I wish I had those Eclipse sunglasses
0:07 right about now. It is bright out here
0:09 next to this. Let me tell you what we’re
0:11 doing. We just lost our sign for
0:13 Sunshine on my Shoulder
0:15 Merry Bevill, What in the world is going on
0:17 out here? It smells delicious like a
0:19 kitchen. We are cooking through the heat
0:21 of the Sun.
0:24 We are solar cooking and this is a Sun Chef Parabolic Cooker.
0:26 We are cooking bacon here today.
0:28 It smells incredible
0:29 okay so we’re channeling it. Describe to
0:31 me how this is all working.
0:33 Well this is a parabolic and if you remember your
0:35 seventh-grade science
0:39 I don’t
The sun rays come in to the parabolic and
0:41 bounce up to a focal point here in the center
okay
0:42 and it gets extremely hot, and it gets hot enough to cook.
so just focus into the Sun
0:48 so this is it and this is a traditional pan
0:50 that is a cast iron skillet that anybody would happen to have
0:53 okay and how long has this bacon been cooking
0:56 that’s probably been cooking about 20 minutes or so
0:58 wow that’s incredible so let’s
1:01 walk over here, You’re gonna show some of
1:02 the other types of solar powered cooking
1:06 devices that you have brought along and
1:07 I want to know how you first got into this.
1:09 Well this is an All-Season Solar
1:12 Cooker and it’s adjustable
1:14 up and down. What we’ve got cooking in
1:16 here is a pot roast
oh my gosh!
1:18 If you notice that it’s cooking between two glass
1:21 bowls
okay
so that’s your heat trap it
1:24 just cooks between those two glass bowls
1:26 it catches the heat
yeah
and gets hot enough to cook
1:31 That’s incredible and this seems
1:33 to be very lightweight. Is this something
1:34 that you could take camping or meant to be mobile
1:36 because it folds down into a
1:38 very small small compact way
that’s so clever!
1:42 and you can take it with you just about anywhere
1:44 And is this specific for
1:47 certain dishes or could you pretty
1:48 much somebody like you and once we’re
1:50 checking your recipes on your website
1:51 figure out how to cook just about anything
1:53 in there?
You can cook anything in here
1:54 just about like you would cook in your
1:56 oven or in like a slow cooker
Wow
1:59 think crock-pot kind of a cooking
Okay
2:02 and you were drawn to this because you
2:03 were already spending some time outdoors
2:04 we were doing craft shows and I wanted a
2:07 way to cook
2:08 while out at the craft show
2:09 without, you know, getting too involved so
2:12 we take these out to the craft show and
2:14 we actually get more interest in the
2:17 solar cookers than
what you were selling
2:19 what we were selling. So I started my blog
2:23 to spread the word
2:24 thus a business is launched at Sunshine
2:26 on my Shoulder.com You’ve got to check
2:28 out her website and she’s got a book
2:30 with all of these recipes here. Even
2:32 brownies! So how long did the brownies take?
2:34 the brownies will probably take about
2:35 depending on which oven you put
2:37 them in, an hour half or so, I cook them
2:41 in this one. This is called the Solavore
2:43 Sport and it’s a traditional box oven.
2:48 Okay well this is really cool. I
2:50 cannot wait to try these brownies. I
2:51 heard they are absolutely delicious.
2:53 and in the State of Arizona everybody
2:54 should be trying this.
2:56 Everybody should be doing this if you cook solar, you save
3:00 on your electricity bill, save on your
3:02 gas bill. If you’re camping, you can cook
3:05 on no burn days and no burn areas
mm-hmm
3:08 it helps me
That’s a very good point. I didn’t think about that.
3:11 And these do not get hot, so they’re safe around children
Wow
3:16 but now if you look inside that oven it is
3:19 probably 300 degrees
Oh my goodness!
3:21 this is great Merry, and as she mentioned
3:23 if you’re going to a potluck, nobody
3:25 wants to bake brownies in the middle of
3:26 the summer, so you’ll be the rock star
3:28 because you’ll be the ones to bring them
3:29 because you’ve been doing some solar
3:30 cooking and maybe it saved a couple of
3:33 bucks on your electricity
3:34 and if the electricity goes out you can cook this way
3:36 This is awesome! The only problem is
3:38 you’re gonna have to get back to me
3:39 after Monday and see how that solar
3:40 eclipse treats you. Don’t make my
3:42 brownies during that time right thank
3:46 you so much we are just down the time
3:48 what this was made here right
yes
3:51 oh the eggs! Where are the eggs eggs I can’t see
3:55 Are those ready?
They are hardboiled. They’re
3:59 baked without water. The thing about this one is it’s
4:02 made with a Sun Shade
okay
4:06 out of your car, so if you’re trapped on the side of the
4:07 highway, you can actually turn your
4:09 windshield shade into a solar cooker,
4:11 heat some water, heat some soup for your kids
4:14 And survivalists! your ears are
4:16 perking up. Merry just saved your life and
4:19 your family right there. That’s Good
4:20 Morning Arizona
4:21 for you, taking care of you. Merry, thank
4:23 you so much Sunshine on my shoulder dot com
4:24 back into you
