QUESTION: Can you filter/remove chlorine from water by standing bottles of water in direct sunlight?
I live in Johannesburg South Africa. We get water supplied (tap water) that is fit for drinking but it has been through chlorination.
We also have extreme high levels of UV in this region.
I once heard that it is good to filter this tap water (at home) in direct sunlight, in bottles. I was told preferably blue bottles. It filters the chlorine out if it stands in the direct sun.
I do not have blue bottles and am using green wine bottles. Some are deeper in the green colour to almost a clear bottle. I leave the cap off.
The water normally stands like that for a couple of days before being used.
So my question does my method filter/clean the water of chlorine? Is it worth doing ?
Does it kill off anything else in the water?
It would be great if you can let me know and if you feel I must add to the process etc.
Hello Andre, Although water can be heated in a solar cooker to kill bugs and bacteria, solar heating does not filter out anything and will not remove any type of chemical. Continue to follow the directions of your region and health department to de-chlorinate your drinking water. Merry
I’m just getting into solar cook.
One of the benefits of solar cooking I haven’t heard mentioned is that when I cook inside during the summer I pay for the energy to do the heating; BUT, then I must pay for the energy to have my air conditioner remove the heat I just paid to bring in. I suspect solar cooking saves me more money on air conditioning than it does on cooking food
Ron, You are very correct and most people do not understand that fact until it is pointed out. Saving money on your electric bill by solar cooking is only marginally due to the cost of running a cooking appliance. The real savings come from NOT heating the kitchen and then having the A/C kick into overdrive to cool the kitchen back down.
Solar chefs have pointed this out many times as one of the key benefits of solar cooking in the modernized world. In fact, it is the second point under Economics in my post “5 Benefits of Solar Cooking” https://sunshineonmyshoulder.com/5-benefits-of-solar-cooking/
Thanks for pointing out this very real benefit to solar cooking. Want to lower your A/C bill? Use a solar cooker.
Welcome to solar cooking. I’m sure you will love it as much as I do. Thanks for visiting my website and thank you for your comment. Many regards, Merry
My name is Eric Zotcavage, I work at 3TV/CBS 5 News here in Phoenix.
I’m going to pitch a story idea about solar ovens and how to use them.
If the idea gets some legs, want to come down and be a part of the solar cooking story? I’m thinking set up a meal cooking to be ready by evening newscast around 5pm.
If you think you’d like to be a part of the demo – please let me know ASAP as I will try to get another expert if you are not avaiable – thanks for considering! My work # is 602-207-3443, I’m here Monday – but off the next three days and back Friday!–
