Potatoes are easy to bake in the solar oven. Most sites say to just put the potatoes into the solar oven and let them cook. Well, I tried that method. i didn’t like it. I don’t know how I could have done it wrong — such simple instructions — but my potatoes came out very dry and wrinkly, and the skins were really hard baked. I tried several times, always with the same results. I guess I just over baked them. So I decided to do it my way – the way I have always baked potatoes. I washed them. And dried them. And wrapped them in aluminum foil. In the solar oven, I covered them with a scrap of black cloth. But you probably use anything to cover them. I baked them for about 2 hours. They came out hot, soft, moist, and delicious – perfect baked potatoes.

I pretty much do the same thing. I think what you have to keep in mind is that, right now, the majority of solar cookers promote a frugal lifestyle with less dependence on commercial products. The point is to use what works. It’s the only way people will begin to see the benefits of solar cooking. Good thinking. Basically, that’s what my SolarWear is all about. Some folks will use dark towels; others just have to have something that looks specifically made for solar cooking. Both work. Next time, make a bunch and use the extras for some great potato salad!
